No matter how the pioneers of Silicon Valley approach the subject of workplace benefits, UK employees have made their stance clear: they’re not interested in clichés. With employers wasting their money on the likes of ping pong tables and bean bags, it’s time to reconsider exactly how they deliver what employees really want.
A recent global study has shed some light on the disconnect between what employees want in a workplace, and what their employers think they want. The resulting clash of ideas is costing business owners a small fortune, whilst productivity and employee engagement plummet. So, what do teams and individuals really want from the office? And how can UK property management companies rise to meet their demands?
Taking a Leaf from the Wrong Book
Ever since the initial boom of companies such as Facebook and Twitter, we’ve been drip fed small glimpses into the imaginative offices littering Silicon Valley. In response to these cool new surroundings, business owners have increasingly tried to replicate these fantastical workplaces here in the UK. Depending on the company, its size, and the money in its coffers, this can mean anything from introducing a ping pong table, all the way to building a new headquarters, complete with a slide.
Unfortunately, what works for our cousins in the States, doesn’t necessarily work for us – as the survey so helpfully pointed out. Of those surveyed from within the UK, only 6% saw any value in office benefits such as ping pong tables, with 9% defending company outings as being valuable. Serving an even more crushing blow, over half of the respondents stated that such features were distracting and damaging productivity.
What Do They Really Want?
But if Silicon Valley’s latest office furnishings aren’t at the top of employees’ workplace wish list, what is?
According to the survey, over half of the UK’s employees have some opinion on that – but aren’t being asked, with only 13% getting a regular opportunity to offer some insights into the workplace. Addressing this must be the first concern, as it allows employers to understand what it is they need to be providing to keep morale and engagement high.
From our experience with clients and their tenants, we’ve come to understand that UK employees don’t feel the need to embrace the trappings of our flashier Stateside cousins. Instead, employees want to be welcomed into a work environment that’s well-lit and features great security and a high standard of cleanliness.
These, it turns out, are the workplace features employees are really after – and it doesn’t take breaking the bank to offer it to them.
How Do We Give it to Them?
Providing employees with a workplace they’re comfortable in and which addresses their needs is a guaranteed path to increased engagement and happier individuals – but how do you get started?
Thanks to our national sensibilities, UK property management companies are already well-versed in delivering what employees want. Crowd UK, for example, offers a range of property management services encompassing cleanliness, security, placemaking and overall operational duties.
For our clients, this means they can offer the workplace employees are really after, in turn attracting new members of the team with their well-managed workplace. Meanwhile, their employees can feel safe and welcome – something they deserve and should expect.
So, before you opt to invest in a slide or a ball pit for your team, consider instead what they really want their office to be like – and remember that excellent property management can deliver exactly that, without the astronomical price involved with a Silicon Valley-style makeover.
