Did you know that over half of UK employees feel obliged to include office cleaning in their daily tasks? The startling figure is playing a heavy role in employee happiness and plummeting productivity – but there’s a simple solution in property management services.
A recent survey of British employees, commissioned by Furniture123.co.uk, has found that an average of 13 hours per year are being lost to cleaning the office – despite 85% of respondents reporting that their office had a cleaner. More worryingly, over half of the employees questioned pointed the finger squarely at employers, who were asking them to undertake additional cleaning, amounting to 3 minutes a day.
Time is Money – and Happiness
Despite 3 minutes a day not sounding like much time – or even 13 hours a year, for that matter – there’s actually much more at stake than you might think.
Firstly, there’s the question of productivity. Every time an employee has to stop to clean, or think about cleaning, their workflow is immediately interrupted, with sometimes disastrous consequences for their focus and creativity. It can then take additional time to get back into the right flow, impacting work further down the line.
Secondly, happiness also plays an important role. Asking employees to clean is a task they’re reluctant to carry out because it’s not necessarily included in their job description. This means they’re taking time away from something they feel passionate about to do menial jobs, and can also make them feel undervalued.
For employers, this is all bad news. It may be 3 minutes a day of employee time, but when disruptions to working are taken into account, as well as falling happiness levels, it becomes clear that the negative impact of asking employees to clean is much greater than the research might initially make you think.
So, how can employers help their teams to focus on core tasks, stay happy and keep the workplace tidy?
Property Management Services to the Rescue
When hearing the words ‘property management’, office services are usually not what employers imagine, with repairs and rent collection appearing much higher on the list. In reality, a property management company is well-equipped to deal with the challenge of cleanliness in the workplace – and if any of the above has rung true with you, rest assured that you’re not the only one.
The team at Crowd UK, for example, have become well-versed in offering property management services to commercial property owners and tenants, who previously had employees scrubbing every spare second they could get. In our experience, employees are much happier when the task is taken out of their hands, and productivity benefits as a result. And, of course, the workplace ends up being maintained to a professional standard – reluctant employees simply can’t compete with professional performance management services.
Although this research has unearthed some home truths, employers are now in a position to use the findings to re-evaluate what they’re asking employees to do. The benefits of opting for property management services are obvious and numerous, and can go a long way towards making for happier employees.
What are you waiting for? Don’t leave the cleaning to your employees: opt for a professional property management firm to provide high quality office cleaning services, and create a workplace your team will be proud to be a part of.
